Background of the study
Social media platforms have significantly influenced the way language is articulated in the digital age. TikTok, with its lip‑sync videos, has emerged as a powerful medium where Nigerian users experiment with phonetic articulation in creative and dynamic ways (Ibrahim, 2023). These videos serve not only as a form of entertainment but also as a site for linguistic innovation, where traditional phonetic norms are reinterpreted and rearticulated to suit digital aesthetics. Nigerian TikTok users often employ exaggerated pronunciations, stylistic modifications, and innovative sound effects to capture audience attention and express cultural identity (Okafor, 2024). This phenomenon is indicative of a broader trend in digital communication where phonetic articulation is subject to rapid change due to technological affordances and social influences. The study investigates how these lip‑sync videos contribute to the evolution of phonetic norms and how such changes reflect underlying social and cultural dynamics. By examining a corpus of TikTok videos, this research aims to document the nature of these phonetic transformations and assess their implications for traditional speech patterns (Chukwu, 2023). The findings are expected to enrich our understanding of digital phonetics and inform future studies in the fields of sociolinguistics and media studies (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although TikTok lip‑sync videos have become a popular medium for creative expression in Nigeria, their impact on phonetic articulation remains underexplored. Existing research primarily focuses on content and visual appeal, leaving a significant gap in understanding how digital manipulation and performance affect speech sounds (Ibrahim, 2023). This lack of empirical evidence hinders the documentation of emerging phonetic patterns and their potential long‑term effects on traditional articulation. Moreover, without targeted analysis, educators and linguists are left without critical insights into how these digital practices might reshape conventional phonetic norms (Okafor, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the influence of TikTok on Nigerian phonetic articulation, a relatively unexplored area in digital linguistics. The research will provide essential insights for linguists, educators, and media scholars by documenting emerging phonetic trends and their broader cultural implications (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing TikTok lip‑sync videos among Nigerian users, focusing exclusively on phonetic changes. It does not extend to other social media platforms or aspects of language beyond phonetic articulation.
